Private participation
and irrigation expansion in Africa
Accra, Ghana
22-26 November 2001
Objectives

The objectives of the seminar are to:

  1. review the current development of private irrigation in general, be it formal or informal;
  2. review the status of Irrigation Management Transfer (IMT) to farmers in the context of the progressive withdrawal of direct government involvement in irrigation management;
  3. recommend the appropriate enabling environment (policy and institutional frameworks, cost-effective and innovative technology development and related strategies) for a sustainable development of private participation in the expansion and performance improvement of irrigated agriculture, paying due attention to equity and gender issues.
It is expected that this seminar will be able to show the important role the private sector can and should play in the field of irrigation development. The conclusions and recommendations should address all aspects of private irrigation and provide governments, technical agencies, donors and financial institutions with appropriate guidance to promote and develop private irrigation.
