Background
180 delegates to this Southern Africa regional agroforestry conference,
from 10 of the 14 countries in SADC, plus partners from Uganda, Kenya,
Ethiopia, West Africa, Europe, Australia USA and Canada; representing
the agricultural and forestry sectors of several national governments
with representation of Parliamentarians, farmers and The National Agricultural
Research Systems (NARS), International Agencies, Universities, Non Governmental
Organizations, and the Private Sector, actively participated in this conference.
There were 140 papers from eminent scientists from the region and beyond.
They recognized that since a similar conference was held in Lilongwe in
1991, Malawi, developments in the region has been characterized by both
achievements and challenges in agroforestry that are distinctly impacting
on the state of development of the region in general, and on the livelihoods
of the rural poor in particular.
The resolutions identify these achievements and challenges and building
on these makes recommedations for the future.
