Agroforestry in Eastern and Southern Africa

CTA - MAFE study tour of Malawi and Zambia, 20 - 30 January 2002

Reports by David N. Ngugi, Relay Consultants and Associates, Kenya

Background

The participants in the study visit comprised experienced researchers, extension and development workers, seed experts and trainers from public and private sectors in East African and SADC countries. Their countries are faced with common land use problems to which agroforestry solutions are relevant. Current agricultural policies of the respective governments are geared towards the enhancement of food security and income generation by increasing farm production. The study visit provided the participants excellent opportunity to see first hand a range of agroforestry technologies being implemented by farmers and or researchers to address regionally relevant land use constraints. Both Malawi and Zambia have had over a decade of concerted agroforestry research and development. The experience thereof formed an important basis for discussion and sharing among the participants.

The selection of the sites to be visited was aimed at exposing the participants to a wide range of agroforestry initiatives and activities that focus on land use problems that are relevant to participants' countries.
