Agrobiotechnology and food security in Southern Africa
A Workshop organised and funded by The
Biotechnology and Development Monitor, the BioMedical Research and Training
Institute, University of Zambia, Lusaka, The Technical Centre for Agriculture
and Rural Cooperation (CTA), PELUM, the Third World Academy of Science,
and NOVIB (OXFAM).
Lusaka, Zambia 30 September - 4 October 2002
How can agrobiotechnology improve food security and rural livelihoods
in Southern Africa? What are the research priorities and capacities of
institutes in the region and how do the policies of governments, donors
and international organisations impact on the ability of farmers to make
use of appropriate agrobiotechnologies?
In this workshop, journalists, broadcasters, scientists and researchers
as well as members of public and civil society organisations come together
to explore how agrobiotechnology can support the development of sustainable
rural livelihoods. Their main objective will be to give coherence and
wider relevance to the often fragmented, inaccessible, and regionally
specific information available on agrobiotechnologies. Drawing on international
experiences they will also explore the implications of genetically modified
crops and food products for the local agricultural economy.
The results of this workshop will be published in the December 2002 editions
of The Biotechnology and Development Monitor and Ground UP, PELUM's magazine,
as well as in local newspaper, magazines and websites. A Rural Radio Package
on Agrobiotechnology and Food Security will also be prepared by CTA. For
more information contact any one of the partner organisations.
