The overgrazed condition of the heavy clay soils in Lesotho has resulted in a growing network of wet season gullies which have eroded arable land and removed tons of topsoil from the country via waterways. To address these symptoms RSDA assists in the reclamation of dongas (erosion gullies) using silt-trapping catchdams made from gabions (stones wrapped in wire mesh). To ameliorate the underlying causes of erosion RSDA organizes the planting of thousands of trees yearly to hold down the soil. Herdboys project attempts to combine income generation with ecologically sound food producing activities to improve the condition of this disenfranchised segment of the population. Finally, community gardening has been promoted to bolster the nutritional intake of rural villages. |
