Background:

The Technological Research Institute [TRI] was formerly founded in 1971 as a Council for Scientific and Technological Research. Its main objective was research coordination in the Sudan. Since 1991 ITR has become a research institute overtaking research activities covering the following fields :-
  1. Chemical Technology and Cellulose
  2. Appropriate Technology
  3. Shelter and Habitat

Objectives:

  1. Adequate utilization of local fibrous raw material (woody and nonwoody) through applicable research and investigations for production of pulp and paper, wood composites,…etc.
  2. Research in utilization of locally available raw materials for the production of chemicals for industrial and domestic use.
  3. Development, modification, promotion, adaptation, and transfer of simple and small scale technologies, in the fields of rural and village technologies, income generating simple technologies, food processing equipment, and building and brick making technologies.
  4. Development of suitable shelter and habitat through provision of housing, for both urban and rural communities, using improved local building materials, design techniques, and basic services to provide descent living environment.

Organization and Staff:

A. Departments:

  1. Chemical Technology and Cellulose
  2. Appropriate Technology
  3. Human Settlements

B. Man-power:

Current Activities:

  1. Laboratory research on pulp and paper and wood composites (particleboard, wood-cement boards …etc.).
  2. Research in extraction for purification of chemicals from local mineral raw materials.
  3. Appropriate technology transfer for productive families and small-scale industries.
  4. Design and fabrication of simple rural and village technologies.
  5. Research in economic local building materials (stabilized bricks, stabilized soil building blocks, alternative cement, low-cost sanitation …etc.).
  6. Research in the provision of economic healthful housing.
  7. Urban planning and design.
