Background:

In 1974, Documentation and Information Centre [NCR-DIC] (formerly National Documentation Centre) was set up to support research, development planning, decision-making and projects monitoring and evaluation. It is one of the institutions that serve as national depository of scientific knowledge and information. It plays an important role in disseminating information and organization activities that create users awareness and understanding important national concerns. It gets assistance from CTA, UNDP, UNSECO, FORD FOUNDATION, and IDRC, which are useful in building of NCR-DIC systems to discharge its functions efficiently.

Objectives:

  1. To collect and retain all scientific and technological information required by the scientific researchers in the Sudan.
  2. To act as a national depository of scientific work of the nation.
  3. To disseminate scientific information of value to the scientists and technologists by bringing out indexing and abstracting services.
  4. To answer specific inquiries from information available in the Centre and undertake literature search and compile bibliography.
  5. To promote and coordinate scientific information services in the country
  6. To facilitate exchange of information between and among national, regional, and international organizations.

Current Activities:

  1. Collecting, processing and disseminating information on published research findings dissertation reports, studies and conference papers as well as on current/foreign located sources relevant to Sudan, documents which exist in single copies available in other institutions are micorfiched and added to Sudan collection.
  2. Several databases, national in scope are designed and maintained, one of which, Sudan bibliographic database of over eleven thousand records. Another database gives information on NCR research projects in all subject fields. Databases relating to the specialists in environmental health and Institutions working area of environment are created and maintained, as well as union lists of serials.
  3. The Centre publishes "Sudan Science Abstracts", which is produced from the national bibliographic database. It comes out twice a year, of which currently twenty-two volumes are issued. It abstracts and indexes reports, theses, dissertations, conference papers, published research findings and journal articles relating to Sudan whether generated in or outside Sudan.
  4. Linkage with international and regional information networks, the centre is focal point of INFOTERRA (International Information System for the Environment), PADIS (Pan-African Development Information System), CEHANET (Centre for Environmental Health Activities Network), IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development), RAIN (Regional Agricultural Information Network for Eastern, Central and Southern Africa).
  5. Information Services that are offered from the library resources, the existed national databases and international databases on CD-ROM, referral services to other INFOTERRA sources that is outside Sudan. The Centre receives MEDLINE, CABI Abstracts, AGRIS, AGRICOLA, INIS ,POPLINE, ERIC as well as Internet services.
  6. Contributing towards development of a national information system, activities in this regard include carrying out surveys of specialized libraries, information Centres and databases, holding conferences, conducting training courses in using CDS/ISIS and CD-ROM, e-mail and Internet services.
