Background
Remote Sensing Authority (RSA) was established in 1995 as an upgrading to the former National Center for Remote Sensing which was operational since 1986. Its main mandate is to promote and coordinate applications of remote sensing in different fields related to national resources and environment.
Objectives:
- Formulation of laws governing the use of remotely sensed data in the Sudan.
- Coordination of Remote Sensing activities in the Sudan and liaise with local and foreign organizations
- Conduction of research on remote sensing applications for natural resources assessment and environment monitoring.
- Transfer of remote sensing technology into the Sudan.
- Promotion of research and academic grounding training in remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
- The assessment of earthquakes hazards in Sudan
- Correlation of the local tectonic with regional activities in the adjacent regions.
Organization and Staff:
A. Departments:
- Visual Image Interpretation and Mapping
- Photo and Image Production
- Computer and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
- Seismology
B. Man-power
- 1 Senior Researcher
- 8 Researchers
- 4 Technicians
- 5 Ancillary staff
- 3 Laborers
Current Activities:
- To conduct research projects based on remote sensing as a tool and methodology. The theme of the research is the natural resources in general and the environment in particular.
- To organize programmes of training in remote sensing and GIS and their applications in natural resources.
- To follow-up earthquake hazards in Sudan through visiting the susceptible areas
- To survey selected areas to decipher the gaps in the interupted remotely sensed geological and geophysical data.
