1. National
Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS)
The National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services, of
Ahmadu Bello University, is one of the Research Institutes under the Federal
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. NAERLS is charged with
the primary responsibility for research into agricultural extension approaches
and adoption processes. It is also involved in overall coordination of
research and extension linkage activities nationwide and the collation,
evaluation and dissemination of agricultural technologies to rural farm
families and other interested end-users through the building of capacity
of field extension workers. The Institute is generally concerned with
aspects related to technical training of extension workers and promotion
of food security and poverty alleviation programmes among farmers.

2. Institute
of Agricultural Research (IAR)
Institute of Agricultural Research is uniquely located within the faculty
of Agriculture, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with mandate covering the
entire Northwest agro ecological zone. IAR is charged with researching
into: genetic improvement of sorghum, cowpea, cotton, groundnut and sunflowers;
farming systems and problems of all agricultural food crops in its mandate
area and maintaining a strong extension service with relevant agricultural
stakeholders in collaboration with the NAERLS and other research institutes.

3. Institute
for Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T)
The Institute for Agricultural Research and Training, an arm of Obafemi
Awolowo University, is one of the five zonal research institutes in the
country coordinating farming systems in the Southwest zone. It has mandate
to research into the genetic potential, yield and nutritional quality
of major food and agro-industrial (raw materials) crops, livestock and
other important commodities adapted to the broad agro-ecological zones
of Southwestern Nigeria. In addition, it has national mandate to research
into soils and fiber crops. It also provides adequate, relevant and functional
junior and middle level manpower training for national agricultural development.

4. National
Cereals Research Institute (NCRI)
Centrally located in the Middle Belt Zone, the NCRI has the mandate to
carry out genetic improvement research works on rice, maize, soybeans,
beniseed and sugar-cane; and proffer solutions to basic problems of soil
fertility, conservation and management; and address production problems
of all agricultural food crops in its mandate zone. It also provides agricultural
extension services in collaboration with the NAERLS and other research
institutes.

5. National
Roots Crops Research Institute (NRCRI)
The NRCRI is the coordinating research institute for the Southeast agro
ecological zone. The specific mandate of NRCRI includes the genetic improvement
of yam, cassava, Irish and sweet potatoes, cocoyam, ginger, and other
root crops of economic importance; and agricultural extension services
in collaboration with the NAERLS and relevant institutions. The institute
is actively involved in the agro processing of food in different forms.

6. Lake
Chad Research Institute (LCRI)
The LCRI, located in Maiduguri, is the coordinating research institute
for the Northeast ecological zone. The institute's mandate includes: genetic
improvement of millet, wheat, barley and sorghum; identifying production
problems of all agricultural food crops grown in the mandate zone and
carrying out agricultural extension services. The LCRI actively collaborates
with the faculty of Agriculture, University of Maiduguri and the IAR,

7. National
Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR)
Located in the vicinity of Kainji dam, NIFFR is tasked with research on
the genetic improvement of fresh water fisheries and other aquatic resources
in rivers and lakes; establish the abundance, distribution and biological
characteristics of fresh water fisheries; carry out hydrological, limnological
and ecological studies on in land waters and aquaculture; and extension.

8. National
Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI)
NAPRI, a university-based research institute located in Shika - Zaria,
has the national mandate to carry out research on the genetic and reproductive
improvement of livestock and pastures and other plants and animal breeding.
The institute covers all aspects of animal nutrition, dairy production
and management practices and improvement and management practices of natural
range and sown pastures. The standardization and quality control of manufactured
animal feeds, design and fabrication of labour-saving devices for livestock
production and livestock extension research liaison in collaboration with
the NAERLS and other Rls, are included in NAPRI's mandate.Address: P.M.B.

9. National
Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI)
Located in the popular Jos Plateau, the NVRI has the national mandate
to research into all aspects of animal diseases, their identification,
treatment and development of control measures. The institute develops
animal vaccines and sera, conducts research into quarantine services and
standardization/quality control of animal vaccines and sera produced in
the country. NVRI carries out relevant extension services in collaboration
with relevant ministries and NAERLS.

10. Project
Coordinating Unit (PCU)
The PCU is a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture mandated
to coordinate and supervise all the activities of Agricultural Development
Projects (ADPs) in the country. The PCU is actively involved in the administrative
and technical aspects of agricultural development. As a supervisory agency
for the ADPs, it coordinates the over all grassroots extension delivery
services in the country. The PCU initiates and actively participates in
diagnostic/thematic surveys and management and training needs assessment
of the ADPs. The PCU collaborates with the NAERLS, other RIs and ministries.
PCU has zonal officers in all agro ecological zones of Nigeria.
