The Seychelles Fishing Authority, a statutory body, falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources(MAMR). The rest of the MAMR is made up of 4 divisions, namely
The Fruit Plant Nursery, which endeavours to make available to farmers and the general public quality fruit trees and other planting materials.
ThePlant Protection Laboratory, which provides assistance to farmers and public in general in order to diagnose plant disorders caused by pests and diseases. Publication: "Code of Conduct: Safe Use of Agricultural Pesticides"
The Plant and Quality Control : phytosanitary certificates are issued to exporters after inspection of products, and upon arrival at the airport imported plant products are also inspected. Infected products are destroyed.
The Extension Service, where the farming community are offered free of charge, on a regular basis, routine visits by Extension Officers, who provides them with advice, training and current affairs.
The Unit has 6 Extension Agents who are responsible for the 6 farming regions of Seychelles. These Agents have the following responsibilities:
The collection of information for the different publications is ongoing.
Agricultural Requisite Store : The Requisite stores are situated in various strategic regions of Seychelles, where the farmers are most concentrated. The farmers can purchase agricultural inputs at affordable prices.
Controlled Environment & Drainage Unit : This unit offers the farming community assistance in the construction of shadehouses and in setting up their irrigation and drainage systems. It concentrates on the expansion of the greenhouse technology to as many farmers as possible. At the same time advice is given to those who had already adopted the technology, hence increasing their holdings' capacity so that a wider range of crops could be targeted in one crop cycle. Todate there is a total of 10 hectares of land cultivated using the controlled environment technology, growing a wide range of vegetable crops. New cultivars are being constantly screened under greenhouses so as to evaluate their yield potential which would eventually be used as yardstick against farmers' production.
All crop varieties recommended from screening are further exposed to more rigorous evaluations to fine conclusions previously made. Publication : Progress Report:No.6 of the Vegetable Unit.
Poultry development section. Publication: farmer's documentation on management of broilers and layers.
Permit and Licences Issuance, where potential pig breeder and fatteners are issued fattening permit and breeding licence, and also licences are issued to potential broiler or layer farmers.
Farmers Training Centre, where a one year vocational training are given to young future farmers.
Maritime Training Centre, where students learn more about fisheries and fishing techniques and mechanics.
