In the early 70s agriculture in Seychelles was dominated by the production of cash crops such as cinnamon bark copra for export. Commercial fruit and vegetables production was traditionally not a well developed sector and most agricultural efforts were concentrated on the production of industrial crops. With the rapid development of the Tourism industry in the 70s as a key sector of the economy, the emphasis in the agricultural development has gradually shifted and the government has paid more attention to the production of food crops. The main objectives of the change of policy have been cut down on fruit and vegetable importation and acquire a reasonable degree of food security and encourage the diversification of the national economy.
