Tumbi Research Institute

Tumbi was initially established in the 1930's as the Veterinary Centre for the western part of Tanzania. In 1938 it was sold to Unyamwezi Federation, which in turn disposed of it to British American Tobacco (BAT) in 1954 to establish the Tobacco nucleus in the Tabora Region. BAT utilised Tumbi as a research station and purchasing centre for tobacco until 1968 when it was handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture and became a sub-station to Ukiriguru. In 1971, however, it acquired the status of an independent Research and Training Institute run by the Tobacco Authority of Tanzania, under the aegis of the Ministry of Agriculture. It was charged with the national responsibility for conducting tobacco research. The ministry of Agriculture took over sole administration in 1975 until, March 1982, when Tumbi was placed under the auspices of TARO. It was later retaken by the Ministry of Agriculture and put under the DRD in 1989 when TARO ceased. It is now the headquarters for the Western Zone Research Institute.

The institute is located 17 km west of Tabora town along the main road to Urambo, adjacent (on the northern side) to the Central Railway Line.

Iringa (Seatondale) Research Sub-Station

The station at Iringa was originally a commercial tobacco and dairy farm called "Seatondale". In the early 1950's It was taken over by the Southern Highlands Non-Native Tobacco Authority and then by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1960. In 1971, the station took the name "Iringa Experimental Station" and came under the administration of ARTI Mbeya. It has been under Tumbi since 1975. The Sub-Station is currently located along the Iringa/Mbeya Highway, on the outskirts of Iringa town, on way to Mbeya.

The new station site is located about 2 km off the main Iringa/Dodoma road on the left hand side, just past the airport. The offices are in Iringa town.

Chunya (Mtanila) Research Sub-Station

The station started in 1973 by the Tobacco Authority of Tanzania (TAT) for tobacco research. In 1977 it was handed over to Kilimo, as a substation to Tumbi.
