Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute
The Southern Research Centre was originally established at Nachingwea. This occurred in 1956 when the Government took over some of the research work initiated by the Tanganyika Agricultural Corporation (formerly known as the Overseas Food Corporation). Most of the research work at this time dealt with the improvement and production of groundnuts. Cashewnuts were soon introduced however, and some cashew breeding began in 1958 and 1959. This was followed a major expansion of research activities between 1959 and 1964 to include soybean and sesame breeding plus agronomic and entomological work.
In 1968 the Centre Headquarters were shifted to Mtwara and the first planting activity started there in 1968/9 season. The new building complex of ARI Naliendele was officially opened in 1972. It is charged with the national responsibility for the oilseed and cashewnut research programmes. The Institute has been assisted in this task since 1977 by ODA, who support oilseeds research, and since 1979 by the Italian Government, which helps with the cashewnut programme. Naliendele was under the administration of TARO. But since 1989 when TARO ceased, Naliendele came under the administration of the DRD, ministry of Agriculture, and it houses the Southern Zone Agricultural Research and Training Institute.
