The Information and Documentation Unit (IDU) acquires, processes, stores and disseminates information on agriculture and its related fields, in order to fulfill its responsibility of keeping current and accurate information that is meaningful to researchers, extension agents, trainer, farmers and other relevant users in Tanzania. Scientific publishing, library services, current awareness services, inquiry services and compilation, management and dissemination of agricultural databases are among the routine services offered by IDU. To support the unit's Self-Help Fund, a token fee is charged for some of the services and products such as photocopying and binding of books. The unit liaises with other national, regional and international organisations and institutions involved in handling agricultural information. The importance of effective and efficient information services for carrying -out research work, whose results are expected to have positive and meaningful impact on farm productivity cannot be over emphasised
During TARP II, the Information and Documentation services is undergoing strengthening at zonal and national levels in order to provide effective support to research programmes. A short term consultancy has been provided to recommend an appropriate structure for the IDU service and funds have been included in the project for its strengthening and operations.
