Mlingano Research Institute
The Institute at Tanga, which was founded in 1934 as a centre for sisal research in Tanganyika, was formerly known as the Sisal Research Growers' Association until 1st July 1968, when it was handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture and renamed ARI Mlingano. Since 1st March 1982 it was administered by TARO, and as from 1989 after TARO ceased to exist, Mlingano is under the administration of the DRD, Ministry of Agriculture. The station is currently the centre for soils and water conservation research in Tanzania, the then National Soil Service headquarters was situated there. This service hwas supported by FAO from the time of its establishment in 1975, and by then, the Government of the Netherlands from 1982.

Kibaha Sugarcane Research Institute (SRI)
The Sugarcane Breeding Station was established at kibaha in 1972 under the then EAAFRO (East African Agricultural and Forestry Research Organisation) of the East African Community. It replaced Kikambala Station near Mombasa, which had operated since 1967. After the Community had collapsed in February 1977, the station was taken over by the Tanzanian Ministry of Agriculture until 1st March 1982 when it came under the administration of TARO (Tanzania Agricultural Research Organisation). However, it was later, in 1989 retaken when TARO ceased to exist, and is now under the DRD.

Marikitanda Research Institute
Established in 1967, the Institute at Marikitanda was formerly a substation of the now defunct Tea Research Institute of East Africa (TRIEA), which had its headquarters at Kericho in Kenya. In June 1978, following the dissolution of the East African Community, the Tanzania Tea Authority, being a member of TRIEA, assumed responsiblity for running the station. The Ministry of Agriculture in Tanzania took it over on 1st July 1979 followed by TARO on 1st March 1982, and then retaken over by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1989. The mandate of the Institute has been to conduct scientific research and advisory work for the advancement of all aspects of tea production in the country, both at the level of the tea estate and smallholder. The institute has been taken by the Tanzania Tea Research Institute of Tanzania (TRIT) following privatisation of tea research in the country.

The institute is situated about 13 kilometres WNW of Amani. After turning right at the Kwamkoro Tea Factory, proceed for 2.5 km before turning left up the road leading to the station. The murram road from Muheza which services the institute is sometimes muddy and can be impassable in bad weather.
Ifakara Research Centre
The Institute at Ifakara was previously known as Kilombero Agricultural Research and Training Institute (KATRIN). It was established in September 1963 under the provisions of an agreement between the Governments of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Federal Republic of Germany. During the first stage of the project, surveys of the topography, soil, vegetation and hydrology of the area were carried out. About 1,500 hectares were cleared (1963-66), but in 1971 about 200 ha were taken away due to the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway.
Formerly there were 3 sections at the Institute, dealing with applied research, training and extension. Research work started in 1967 and short training courses for extension staff and progressive farmers in 1969. On 1st March 1982 TARO took over administration of the research section until 1989 when it was defunct and its responsibilities taken over by the DRD of the Ministry of Agriculture. The institute is responsible for rice research activities.

Tanga Livestock Research Centre
The area occupied by the centre was formerly inhabited by the local people until world war II when in 1993 the air flect army made its base. In 1946 after the war, the centre was turned into a commercial dairy farm "Tanga Dairy:. In 1958, the farm became a Livestock Experimental station aimed at the production of improved livestock experimental station aimed at the production of improved livestock for distribution to farmers. The breeding programme aimed at developing a dairy animal suitable to the hot humid coastal conditions, and in 1965 much of the research work was directed towards solving the animal husbandry problems in the area.
In 1969, the station was renamed "Research and Training Institute" under the Division of Research, Training and Farmers Education in the Ministry of Agriculture. During the same period, another upgrading programme was initiated involving mating pure Borans and upgraded cattle with the imported Sahiwals and also pigs were introduced at the institute.
In 1973, the name changed to livestock research centre under the Ministry of agriculture. Breeding for optimum dairy production in the humid coastal belt of Tanzania project was started in 1975. From July 1981 the centre was being run by the TALIRO until 1989 when the later ceased to exist, and the centre was reattached to the DRD.

Animal Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) - Temeke
The Animal Diseases Research Institute (ADRI), Temeke, formerly known as the Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL), was established in 1961. Before its establishement most animal diseases research took place at the Central Veterinary Mpwapwa. Construction funds were donated by the British Government while the Federal Republic of Germary provided technical assistance. In 1962 staff and laboratory equipment were transferred from Mpwapwa to CVL, Dar es salaam, with the establishment of the Tanzania Livestock Research Organisation (TALIRO) in 1981, the CVL changed its name and has since then bean known as ADRI, Dar es Salaam. As of 1st July, 1981, the institute was being administered by the TALIRO until the later's defunction in 1989 when like TALIRO itself, ADRI was incorporated into the DRD as a national institute with mandate to conduct research on animal diseases.

Chollima (Dakawa) Agro-Scientific Research Centre
In 1982 a joint project was begun by the Government or Tanzania and the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea to carry out research on maize, rice and vegetables under irrigation. The Agro-scientific Research Centre at Dakawa is the result. It is currently undergoing development.

Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute
(The former National Coconut Development Programme)
The National Coconut Development Programme officially started on 1st July, 1979, following a request from the Tanzanian Government to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) for technical assistance to strengthen the coconut industry in Tanzania. It was set up by the Government of Tanzania with the assistance of the FRG and the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank. The German Agency for Technical Co-operation (GTZ) was given responsibility for the management of both the FRG - and the IDA - funded projects in order to ensure that the activities of both components complemented each other. The former coconut research activities conducted under ARI Mlingano, at LBS Tanga, Chambezi Agricultural Station and Mlingano itself were also incorporated into the NCDP.
