DRD as NARS Entity
The DRD is the largest entity in the Tanzanian National Agricultural Research System (NARS) charged with the development, adoption, adaptation of appropriate technologies in the country. It is also responsible for development of appropriate technologies, which contribute to the conservation of natural resource base and enhance sustainable agricultural production systems. The basic philosophy of DRD is to undertake client-oriented demand-driven and cost-effective research. In general terms DRD has the following functions:
- Coordinate research programmes of the MAC and its organisations in accordance with the national policies and priorities for agricultural and livestock research.
- Recommend the use of research findings and in collaboration with extension services, make sure that the research recommendations reach the farming community, especially smallholder farmers
- Coordinate and integrate agricultural research activities with those of other sectors (e.g. forestry, fisheries) and other institutions (e.g. universities) through the Commission for Science and Technology
- Collaborate with relevant regional research bodies (e.g. ASARECA and SACCAR) and international agricultural research organisations (e.g. International Agricultural Research Centers--IARCs)
