Biometric and Computing

This is a unit that provide statistical, computing and training services in the Department. The services offered and activities during the period under review are described below.

The section was involved with design of agricultural experiments and questionnaires for sample surveys, and statistical analyses. The most common experimental design used were the Randomised Complete Block, Split-plot and to lesser extent the Lattice designs in hich a large number of treatments or varieties were evaluated.

The main statistical packages used for data analysis were Statistical Analysis System (SAS), MatModel and Mstat-C. Commercial packages such as Lotus 1-2-3 and dBASE IV were used mainly for data entry. Researchers and their assistants input their data and conduct statistical analysis and interpretation of results. The Biometrician provide advise where there is doubt with analysis and interpretation.

This takes a large part of the unit's resources since the statistical services are accompanied by use of computing equipment and application software. The unit facilitate users with the smooth operations of their computer equipments by ensuring that they are repaired through the GBC contracted company called Office Techniques. A total of 79 faults ranging from blank monitors, UPS battery failure, loose printer ports and faulty mouse devices were attended to during the period under review.

The section collaborated with the Library and Documentation Unit to obtain Internet link through a local service provider Info-Botswana. The Library and the Directors office each have Internet and e-mail link.

All computing equipments at Sebele and Pelotshetlha are secured together with security cables which make it difficult to remove or steal. The same will be done at all stations.

The Unit developed application software using a system called DataEasy for the Estate management Unit and Administration for processing water metre readings for billing, and telephone usage by staff.

The Unit has one position for Biometrician, another for Assistant Biometrician which was recently filled, and a vacancy at Senior Technical Assistant level which is yet to be filled.
