Each
year, CTA invites 15-20 experts in the field of
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)
for a 2-3 day consultative Observatory meeting
on ICT issues and policies in African, Caribbean
and Pacific (ACP) countries. The central theme
of this year's Observatory meeting was gender
in the context of ICTs for agricultural and rural
development. The meeting looked at the impact
of ICTs from a gender perspective and tried to
identify ways in which modern ICTs can help to
empower rural women in ACP countries.
The
programme of the consultative meeting started
with four public lectures on 11 September
by well-known experts in the field of gender,
agriculture and ICTs. The speakers discussed challenges
and opportunities in gender, ICTs and agriculture,
and explored policy priorities for upcoming World
Summits (e.g. 3rd World Congress on Rural Women;
World Summit on the Information Society).
A
statement on Gender and Agriculture in the Information
Society has been prepared by the participants
of the meeting.
