Information and communication management (ICM) strategies for federations of farmers' organisations CTA

Introduction

In June 2000, CTA organised a seminar in Paris entitled "Information for agricultural and rural development in ACP countries: emerging stakeholders, new media and priority themes". This seminar nearly gathered all categories of rural development actors in ACP countries. The findings of this meeting contributed to the reflections carried out within the framework of CTA's new Strategic Plan, which defined and put forward CTA's principal role as assisting rural actors in formulating and implementing their own ICM strategies.

The Douala meeting falls within this perspective, and will bring together representatives of federations of farmers' organisations, technical, private and public support organisations, donors and financing structures involved in developmental activities, in order to propose to CTA as well as to other support institutions, enabling strategies to ensure a better information and communication management.

Overall objective
To contribute to strengthening the roles of federations of farmers' organisations and producers in the development process.

Specific objective
To propose strategies aimed at strengthening the information communication management capacities of federations of farmers' organisations.

Expected results
Five main results are expected as follows:

  • Description and analysis of current ICM practices within the umbrella organisations;
  • Identification and analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and potentialities/threats in the current practices of federations of famers' organisations regarding the quality of service of its members and producers and the relationship with support organisations;
  • Identification of priority areas and strategies to be put in place in order to strengthen the ICM capacities of federations of famers' organisations;
  • Identification of the role of support organisations in the determined strategies;
